An Introduction to Powerless Flight at the Midland Gliding Club

One of the best ways to see if you might like gliding is to have a trial lesson. This involves one or two launches, by winch or aerotow depending on conditions, and at least twenty minutes flying time during which you will be introduced to the characteristics of the aeroplane and the principal controls. You will be encouraged to take control of the plane and to feel what is like to fly it yourself. Of course you will be in a two seat trainer with an experienced instructor who will do the launch and the landing and will demonstrate the principal maneuvers.

OPTION TWO
Join the Mile High Club at the Midland Gliding Club

If you want an extended experience then try our "Mile HIgh Club" that takes you on an aerotow launch to 1 mile above sea level, sometimes above cloud. If the weather conditions are not suitable we offer an extended aerotow and a winch launch instead. You get a signed colour certificate to commemorate your flight.

OPTION THREE
The Mile High PLUS Premium Day at the Mynd

All the benefits of the standard Mile High Trial Lesson but with overnight accommodation in a double en-suite room, Saturday night dinner and Sunday breakfast in the club house with "Pie in the Sky", our resident caterers, included. You can bring your spouse or partner along for an extra £35 (payable separately on arrival).

Book your flight for Saturday afternoon, stay for dinner, enjoy the fun in the bar, you don't have to drive home, fly again Sunday at member rates. Or arrive Saturday evening in time for dinner (before 7:30 pm), have your trial lesson Sunday morning, fly again at member rates in the afternoon.

OPTION FOUR
3 months temporary membership with the first flight free.

If you think you would like to take up gliding then this is the option for you. 3 months temporary membership, first flight free and as much flying as you want after that at club rates with free instruction at weekends. Members discounts on weekday courses and access to all the facilities of the club. Trial Membership is not open to anyone who has previously had any sort of membership of the Midland Gliding Club.

OPTION FIVE
A weekday at the Midland Gliding Club

For anyone who is thinking of taking up gliding, we offer a full day at the Midland Gliding Club. This one-day course will give you a comprehensive introduction to the sport and an insight into what the club offers to members. It includes three month’s membership, during which you will have full use of the club’s facilities with flying at member’s rates and all instruction free or if you do decide to join the club within one week of the course you will receive a £100 discount on our membership fee.
 
During the one-day course you will be looked after by one of our two professional instructors. You will be given a safety briefing followed by an introduction to our gliders and operations on the airfield before going flying. Your instructor will fly the launches and the landings, introduce you to the flying characteristics of the glider and the principal controls, and encourage you to take your first steps to becoming a glider pilot by taking the controls yourself. We guarantee that you will have at least three flights with a minimum of one hour in a two-seat training glider; if weather conditions prevent you completing the launches and flying on the day, you can come back on another day to complete your flying .

Due to demand and the fact that we are limited to the number of flights we can do in any one day there may be, at peak times, a waiting list for the available slots. We will do our best to allocate to you the first available slot when you phone to book a flight. We are now doing special trial lesson evenings on Friday nights throughout the summer. The holder of a voucher is entitled to bring with them up to, but no more than, 3 people as spectators. Spectators are not allowed "airside" during the flight for safety reasons.

Trial lessons are available throughout the year and though between April and October is likely to give the best soaring weather, clear winter days give the best views and winter wave weather systems often allow us to get considerably higher. Either way we promise a great experience.  We can now offer trial lessons during the week or in the evenings so ask in the office when you book.  It is important that you book ahead as you will be given a specific time to attend. Because of pressure of demand we can not always give lessons to people who do not book ahead, though we we will always do our best to accomodate everyone, even at short notice .

On summer evenings the club welcomes groups of (up to 12) like-minded people, perhaps friends or colleagues, who wish to sample trial lessons on a team basis, followed by a meal in the clubhouse and use of the club bar. We can also arrange corporate days and evenings including catering. Please ring for a quotation.
