Full flying, country overseas and junior membership of the club confers access to all of the club's facilities, including use of the gliders at competitive rates. Except on holiday courses (where instruction is included in the course fee), instruction is free to all club members, and those under 21 benefit from half price flying charges and discounted membership rates.
Non-Flying membership is normally reserved for former Full Flying members, and confers members’ voting rights but not the right to fly club aircraft
Social membership is offered at the discretion of the committee to people wanting to use the club’s facilities but not to fly club aircraft. The number of social members is capped at 10% of the total club membership.
Flyiing Members can also fly the DG505. This
is a very capable cross country machine similar to a
Duo Discus and can be flown solo or mutual or with an instructor.
On
our extensive airfield (about 134ha), the club buildings
include hangar, glider workshops, winch garage and workshop,
heated parachute storage, battery charging, a comfortable
clubhouse with dining room, tv room, lounge, bar, office,
briefing room, and overnight accommodation in centrally
heated recently overhauled bunkrooms and private rooms with modern showers
and toilet facilities. Two of the rooms are now en-suite.
The club operates 7 days a week from
mid-March until the end of October and from Thursday
through Sunday
and other suitable flying days throughout the winter.
In summer, evening flying takes place on most days,
with evening courses for club members held on several
evenings each week
Bungey launching. We are one of the
few clubs left in Europe that still bungey launches
when conditions
allow.
All
we
need
is a wind above 20kts from the west. We have just purchased
a new bungee rope so if you have never tried this most
elegant form of launching come on an expedition and
get signed off. You might even catch our wave and see
Wales from 20,000 feet!
We take Cross Country flying fairly seriously -
after all we start at 3000 ft above sea level off a
wire
launch! But we do encourage all our members, especially
our Juniors, to take part in local, regional and national
competitions. Several flights over 650km have beencompleted
from the Mynd. Several of our members compete at National level and two are members of the British Team.
