The first ever flight from the Long Mynd took place on August 14th 1934 and marked the official birth of the Midland Gliding Club. Gliders have been soaring the 5 mile west facing ridge ever since and more recently the east ridge. We get good wave from SW to NW and E to SE as well as thermals for much of the year so no wonder it has become such a popular site for sailplanes, hang gliders and paragliders.
To celebrate this special year MGC has organised a series of events throughout the summer to which everyone is invited.
Dinner dance, Sat 28 th March.
Hangar Barn Dance, Sat 30 th May
Competition Enterprise week, 4 th to 12 th July.
Competition Enterprise Party 12 th July
Anniversary Party, Sat 15 th August
Vintage Glider Club week, 15 th to 22 nd August
Task week 22 nd to 31 st August
Autumn dinner dance and prize giving, Sat 10 th October
Halloween party, Sat 31 st October
We cordially invite anyone with an interest in gliding, owners of vintage gliders, past members, past visitors, past course members, to join us for some of this very special year and help us to party.
We offer on site accommodation, profession instructors, professional winch drivers, full time professional catering, a well stocked bar, 365 acre airfield, winch, aerotow and bungee launching and access to hundreds of kilometres of uncontrolled airspace through the West Midlands, Shropshire, Herefordshire and the Welsh Marches. On a good day Snowdon is within reach as is most of the centre of the UK for long cross country flights. 750k triangles have been achieved from the Mynd.
